Teen Mural Class at the Family Nurturing Center

3 panel mural1_TRK5830

This past winter I conducted a teen mural class for the Kennedy Heights Arts Center. Our project was to do three indoor murals for the Family Nurturing Center (FNC) of Cincinnati.  For eight consecutive Saturdays my group of talented teens and I planned and executed vivid compositions that expressed the FNC’s mission of bringing families back together with support and love.  From a jungle scene inspired by the works of Henri Rousseau, to a mother and child crossing a treacherous sea, and a broken home being put back together again; all three murals give parents who are waiting to meet their children something to look at that will inspire them as they face the road ahead. Thank you FNC for inviting us to create in your space.  Most of all, a special thanks to Micayah Smith, Max Olderding, Lucy Lorbach, Shamia Mills, Anne Knellinger, Evan Nicole Taylor, Will Rentz Mccoy, Amaya Boyd, Katie Michael, Kurtis Rodger, Alex Wilson, Justin Mackey,  and Mount St. Joseph University student Nicole Staun for helping make our vision come to life. Check out our murals below.

The book is filled with other great writings accompanied with strong visual imagery that evokes the mind and spirit. If you would like a copy of this book it is sold at the Alice F. and Harris K. It is an honor to have my artwork featured at the UC Health Woman’s Center Art Exhibition.  It is even a greater honor to be featured in the article Healing Through Art, on the UC Health website.  I would like to thank the curator of the exhibition Melissa Mitchell and the director of the center Dr. Lisa Larkin for recognizing the arts and its power to heal. For this exhibition I focused on the universal theme of art being used to heal the spirit and mind.  From peace of mind, good health, empowerment, courage and perseverance, we can create physical and social change. Whether a work of art reminds us of a safe place or can turn sorrow to joy, art changes lives.  When I walked in UC Health Woman’s Center I saw works of art that did this, and I know this will do the same for many others.
